Esophageal Problems
We provide complete treatments for esophageal disorders, including esophageal cancer and benign esophageal diseases--such as Barrett's esophagus, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and achalasia:
Esophageal cancer is often treated by surgical removal, but we also perform simpler procedures to improve swallowing, such as laser therapy and stent placement.
In many patients with severe symptoms, GERD is treated by fundoplication surgery--usually performed laparoscopically.
Surgery to treat achalasia is often performed laparoscopically as well.
The majority of the procedures done for esophageal disease involves one of the most common causes for ER visits in this country. Heartburn or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease is a condition where acid backwask from the stomach into the esophagus causes substernal chest discomfort. You may find that drinking milk or taking antacids relieve the pain. However, without being formally worked up to evaluate the severity of the disease is a common mistake in which an increase risk for developing cancer may occur. ( Please refer to Heartburn Clinic )
Other esophageal diseases treated by tradition or minimally invasive approach:
- Esophageal cancer
- Achalasia
- Cysts
- Diverticulum
